Buentello, whose Aug. 1 affray by Gilbert Yvel was scratched due to the promotional demise of “Affliction: Entertainment,” returns to the UFC for the fundamental time since his TKO conquest on the former Gilbert Aldana at UFC 57 in 2006. Buentello suffered a loss to then-champ Andrei Arlovski in his previous contest and then left the organization beyond rebounding for the win on Aldana.

 

Buentello has strung together a solid run since that lapse to Arlovski; he's 6-1 (with five stoppages) with the single loss coming to Alistair Overeem in a November 2007 fight for Strikeforce's first-ever heavyweight title. Buentello most currently defeated Kirill “Baby Fedor” Sidelnikov at “Affliction: Day of Reckoning” in January.

 

 

 

Struve, despite being in his first fiscal year in the UFC, by this time compels his fourth appearance for the promotion. The Dutch combatant and patriarch of the European fight circuit entered the UFC alongside a five-fight beat streak in February and suffered a first-round TKO perdition to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 95 in London.

Undefeated Jon Jones (9-0) have on heavyweight Matt Hamill (8-2) and lightweight Frankie Edgar (10-1) have on 155-pound foe Kurt Pellegrino (20-4).

 

Jones, 22, has won his previous three bouts below the UFC banner, including a UFC 94 sway contrary to Stephan Bonnar a year ago. Hamill, a three-time collegiate wrestling champion, scored a first-round knockout of Mark Munoz at UFC 96 in March.

PARAMOUNT'S “The Lovely Bones” had a lovely screening Wednesday at the Paris Theatre. It was cold. It poured rain. Traffic was backed up to New Haven thanks to the tree-lighting. And someone's tote bag ripped the jacket of Cinema Society organizer

Alice Sebold's dark best seller “The Lovely Bones” is about a murdered girl who monitors her killer from heaven. The film's director,

Peter Jackson, in scruffy beard, tumbled hair, rumpled pants, sneakers, and its diametrically opposite star

Mark Wahlberg, immaculate in knife-crease black suit, black tie, starched shirt, slicked hair, spit-polish shoes, both acknowledge familiarity with the paranormal.

Jackson: “I saw a ghost once. Maybe 20 years ago. I was alone, reading a newspaper in a 100-year-old building in New Zealand, when I sensed another presence. Looking up, I saw a lady screaming with no sound coming out. She looked at me accusatorily for maybe eight seconds, then vanished. I later told a friend, 'I think I saw a ghost.'   With the recent passing of Halloween a very familiar argument arose in my home.  It happens every year around this holiday, especially with the television programming going ballistic on  showing every scary movie ever made two weeks prior to and on Halloween.  You see, I grew up watching scary movies from the time I was a teenager, whether it was with my family or friends.  We looked forward to the Halloween season especially when the newest scary movies would come to the theaters.  My high school friends and I would bombard the theater on a Friday night and wait in a huge line to see such classics as Halloween or Friday the 13th.   It was great fun to be in a group of people, clutching the person next to you and all jumping at once at every surprise the movie had to offer.  I saw no harm in that back then, and I don't now.  Unfortunately, my husband would beg to differ.

  My very sweet, very loving husband grew up watching nothing but sports.  He played sports from his little league days all the way up through high school and watched them on T.V. when he wasn't playing them.  When a good majority of kids were reading the comics he was reading the sports page.  He continues now to watch mostly sports on television if given the time to do so, especially during football season.  If there isn't a sporting event on that he wants to see, he tunes in to ESPN to see what might be coming on soon or the scores of games that have already been played.  I have no problem with any of this at all.  That is how my husband was raised and that is part of who he is.  I respect that, even if I don't share his passion for it all the time.  I am what you might call a casual sports enthusiast.  I have a favorite NBA team, a favorite college basketball team, and a couple of baseball teams I enjoy watching.   Aside from that, I could take or leave sports.  Nevertheless, I know my husband enjoys it and when he isn't working he has full remote control to watch whatever sports-related program he wishes.  With that in mind, I would think that my love of horror flicks would be equally respected.   I'm sure you can guess where I'm going with this.

  It has always been my husband's opinion that watching horror movies can warp your mind, maybe even cause a person to become a bit deranged or worse.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure you can probably interview some notorious serial killers and find that they have watched many of the classic scary movies of their time.  No argument there.  I'm sure they have also watched Bambi and gotten an eerie smile on their face the moment Bambi's mother gets shot by the hunter.  You see, I don't believe that a person necessarily becomes psychotic from watching something horrifying; I believe they are psychotic because they already want to be the one doing the horrifying acts.  

  This Halloween season on cable a certain channel did a countdown show of the top 100 scary movies of all time.  Naturally I taped every hour episode and discovered I had seen a good majority of these movies; not all of them but a good number.  If my husband's theory were true then I'd venture to say I'd have been a psycho killer many years by now  and I can assure you this isn't the case.  Really, I swear, I'm innocent.  I'm a very docile mother of two growing children who sits at home, reading and writing.  Pretty harmless I'd say.  After twenty years of marriage I've given up trying to convince my other half that watching scary movies is harmless and I realize that we may never agree on this topic.  That would be okay with me, if only the children could get off so easily.

  Here is where things get a bit sticky.  I have a son in high school and a daughter in middle school.  They both love their father dearly, but neither of them has inherited his love of sports.  My son likes to play basketball for fun and recreation, but not competitively.  My daughter was in cheerleading until an injury put her on the sidelines.  Other than that, they are both very artistic and enjoy writing, music and movies.  My son has aspirations of becoming a writer, in particular the next Stephen King.  Mr. King was actually my inspiration to watch scary movies when I was a teenager as I started reading some of his short story collections.  I find reading Stephen King much like riding an emotional roller coaster and I love every minute of it.  A couple of years ago my son picked up one of my King novels that I had recently finished and read it in two days.  He's been hooked ever since and has read 25 of his novels in two years, some of them three times.  I am very happy that he has such a love of reading and writing because I think both will take him very far in life, regardless of his profession.  My daughter has a love for drama, music and writing.  You might say it's in their blood……(evil laugh ensuing).

  The above is what usually starts the repeat “discussion” every October.  My husband has long since realized that I am going to watch horror movies and read Stephen King whether he enjoys it or not.  With our children being ages 12 and 15 he has stopped forbidding them to watch them also; however, it always stirs up the same old controversy.  He thinks that watching such things can warp their minds and perhaps make them, for lack of a better word, disturbed.  Mind you, when we go out as a family we have complete strangers come up to us and tell us what wonderful children we have.  They are kind, considerate, respectful of others (especially adults) and are never disruptive.  To me, they are just being their everyday selves.  I have wonderful kids who get exceptional grades and wouldn't hurt a fly.  We are very close and have a great time together and they have a great time with their dad also.  So what's the problem?  They know the difference between fantasy and reality, right and wrong, etc.  I draw the line at letting them watch anything truly disturbing or beyond their understanding at their age level.  I have more of a problem letting them watch anything sexually explicit or strongly suggestive (which there is more of on regular T.V. and cable than anything else these days).  Even with all this, my husband still feels the need to tell me that they should watch movies that have more of a positive message.  Okay, I have no problem with a variety of movies or shows.  But I hold true to my position that horror movies don't kill people; people kill people.

  I am fully aware that there are two very distinct sides to this fence, which is why I decided to write this article.  I'd truly like to hear comments from both sides on this topic.  What do you think readers?  I'm all ears (and no, I'm not keeping them in a jar in my basement).

After seeing the movie with the same title, I will never think of Chante Moore's chart topping 1990's song, “Precious,” quite the same, ever again. The movie Precious left me feeling deeply wounded, confused and horrified that there are actually fellow citizens among us who live lives similar to the film, every day of their lives. It was as if someone took a fist and hit me square in the jaw–I have never left a movie feeling quite so stunned.

While we all know that Claireece “Precious” Jones was a “composite character” made up of various young women that the author Sapphire knew, the impact of wrapping it all in to one powerful movie was more than most of us could handle. I attended the movie with my mother (a survivor of childhood abuse) and six other girlfriends whose ages ranged from 23 to 62. All of us wept, gasped, and lamented about how far we as a people have seemingly fallen.

Although, I DO NOT think that this kind of sexual abuse and incest goes on all the time–I do think that people live in the horrific hell of poverty, abuse and anger ALL the time. This movie was meant to shock us into being mortified: this does happen here in America.

This movie was a lot to handle–a lot. The incest scenes which involved her father and sometimes her own mother still has me messed up four days later. I think the point is that too much anger is going on with us as black people, and it shows every day.

I heard someone say “Oprah was incest obsessed”. Wow! Oprah & Tyler Perry are to be applauded for their courage in producing this movie–my own mother was the victim of childhood rape by her mother's boyfriend; he also molested her younger brother. Trust me, the scars last forever. It took my mom and her brother 50+ years to speak of what happened to them and when they did, they got clobbered by their so-called family.

I suppose if I were raped as a child, or was the victim of incest by an elder member of my family, I too would be obsessed with making sure no-one else suffered my fate. I am still disturbed by the trend I see with how we as black folks are still living in America 400 years after slavery began–and DON'T fool yourselves folks–there is still a HUGE emotional connection to that history and it affects where we are right now. My hope is that this movie will encourage more women and men to share their stories and work to break the systemic emotional chains that have crippled us as black men and women for generations.

Scan through the crowd at the endure stint fair at Hofstra University and chances are you won't look for Matt Clark chatting aloft any of the recruiters. Not one to dwell in the past, one quickly gets the sense that he is engrosed scouring the on the internet classifieds and auctions for fresh equipment, whilst at the similar time quietly plotting his after surf trip. Today there is not room in Corporate America for Matt Clark.

“I loved surfing Hawaii yet I actually went on that trip as a photographer added than a surfer. I had some sick small tubes one morn at Ehukai. I also got two tubes at Pipe that were rad,” Matt recalls. “Overall the trip was so wealth fun. The endure time I went to the North Shore we got a solid 4-8ft Hawaiian swell, which was probably about 12-15 foot faces, however top to base barrels. That was pretty amazing, still this time, wow!

“The sickest memory I will ever have is of waves that I didn't surf while on this trip. We had been doing something else in the middle of the afternoon – can't recall what exactly because my mind melted by what I experienced on the beach. I pulled up to Pipe and ran from the car to the beach because there was only about forty-five minutes of sunlight left. I hurried up the path and saw the most messed up, epic, scary, perfect thing I have ever seen. Honestly, I can't really explain it. It was as if every other time I had seen Pipe in person it was real heavy and spitting and just sick. But this time, minutes lasted forever. Everything just slowed down, and everyone on the beach just sat there, in awe. Hardly anyone clapped at the end of people’s rides. It was as if a light switch turned on and I finally saw why the North Shore was so special. Aside from that there were plenty of crazy stories as there usually are with the crew I travel with.”

In addition to his two trips to Hawaii, Matt has likewise surfed and shot Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica and higher and down the East Coast. “I want Puerto Rico, that place is a bullion lode for the genuine surfer, not for people who want to suspend out in Rincon, drink beers in the midst of the day, and surf crowded Domes. There is a whole Island alongside epic surf. I've surfed numerous places completely alone that were just going away. Shooting photos there - not as painless. I think alongside a water-housing that place need to be huge. Mexico is pretty gnarly and not actually difficult to shoot. It's difficult to surf if you are scared of double overhead monsters. Costa Rica…well I only had a crap 50mm eyeglass or something and I barely left the place we stayed.”

Flash Back a few months prior to his “moment at Pipe”, as he was wrapping higher his ultimate semester at Hofstra, and one can simply imagine the dinner time conversations in the Clark establishment. The son of a Con Ed couple (and grandson of a Con Ed employee), Matt Clark was born in Elmhurst, NY, and divided his early childhood and adolescent seasons among Astoria and Merrick. His parents divorced when he was 8 seasons old, and his Mom eventually remarried (another Con Ed guy) and moved in a small suburban house with “mustard walls and a pink carpet.” With one brother, one half-brother from his mother's second marriage, and a step-brother and step-sister from his step-father's previous marriage, space got a little tight from time to time. “For a while we must sleep in the cellar of my mom's abode. There were two bed beds for us, and my half-brother have to surely sleep in a closet converted to room after to my parents room,” Matt recalls. “I swear, that wardrobe was none larger than six foot by six bottom.”

Spending much of his teenage years traveling back and onward from Long Island to Queens in purchase to consume time alongside his patriarch brought a view of isolation to Matt, who thought himself a loner through almost all of teenage days. Through that isolation he developed a burning wish to excel at each one endeavor, duel his challenges head-on nevertheless remaining ever-mindful and appreciative of any help he received together the method. He was the first in his family to discern to surf and, perhaps even added impressive, the original in his descendants to graduate college - and by that degree, the original to carry the enormous weight to thrive in the corporate world.
